PLOT : In the backdrop of the 1950s, a time when impairments often led to loss of employment, social exclusion, and significant marginalization, Antonio Maglio, a visionary physician and manager at the Italian National Institute for Insurance against Accidents at Work (INAIL), dared to challenge societal norms. Prevailing attitudes towards disability were overwhelmingly negative and restrictive, but Maglio stood as a beacon of hope and progress. He staunchly believed in the transformative power of sports as a vital tool for rehabilitation and social integration, seeing beyond physical impairments to potential empowerment. Maglio's revolutionary idea envisioned an unprecedented fusion of the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome with an international tournament for athletes with disabilities. This ground-breaking event aimed to liberate disabled individuals from societal neglect and showcase their remarkable abilities on the global stage, declaring that with support and opportunities, physical disability did not equate to inability.
