PLOT : Mei, a young Chinese martial artist, travels to Rome in search of her missing sister. Her investigation leads her to the bustling Esquilino district and a shady restaurant known as “La città proibita,” a front for criminal activities linked to the Chinese underworld. Along the way she meets Marcello, the son of an indebted Italian restaurateur whose father has mysteriously disappeared. As their stories intertwine, the two unlikely allies confront cultural barriers, organized crime, and painful family secrets. Through intense confrontations and unexpected bonds, Mei and Marcello embark on a journey that blends revenge, loyalty, and redemption in the multicultural heart of Rome.
Gabriele Mainetti. Italian filmmaker, known for revitalizing genre cinema within contemporary Italian film. His breakthrough feature They Call Me Jeeg (2015) reimagined the superhero genre in a gritty Roman setting and won multiple David di Donatello awards. He followed it with the ambitious wartime fantasy Freaks Out (2021), which premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Mainetti’s work is recognized for blending popular genres such as action, fantasy, and adventure with strong character driven storytelling. With La città proibita, he merges Italian cinema with martial arts traditions, creating a unique cross cultural action film set in Rome that combines kung-fu choreography, crime drama, and emotional storytelling.
