Alessandro Genovesi was born in Milan in 1973 and began his professional career on stage as an actor and then playwright and director. In 2007 he had his break in theatre with the play Happy Familywhich he both wrote and directed. The play won several awards and in 2010 was adapted to film and directed by Gabriele Salvatores. Genovesi made his directorial film debut in 2011 with the film The Worst Week of My Life.

Le film a été un succès au box-office, et il a ensuite remporté deux prix pour le meilleur acteur et la meilleure actrice aux Capri Hollywood Awards. Genovesi a poursuivi en réalisant la suite du film, Il peggior Natale della mia vita (2012).  En 2018, Genovesi a remporté le prix du public pour le meilleur film étranger au Outflix Film Festival.
