PLOT : Gabriel Carvin, France’s most renowned chef, finally receives his third Michelin star. While this should be a time of celebration, Gabriel is plagued by a sense of emptiness that he can’t explain. Despite his success, he finds himself drowning in alcohol, dealing with infidelity in his marriage, and feeling disconnected from his sons. In a surprising turn of events, hypnosis helps Gabriel recall a pivotal moment from his past: his defeat in a cooking competition to a Japanese chef in 1978. This memory prompts him to journey to Japan in search of new inspiration and the elusive “fifth taste” known as umami. In Japan, he meets Tetsuichi Morita, a master of umami cuisine, and a rich cultural exchange ensues. Through their interactions, Gabriel rediscovers his passion for cooking and a renewed zest for life.
