PLOT : When a prominent Kitasoo/Xai’Xais activist passes away, his 14-year-old niece Ella embarks on a kayak journey to take his ashes home to Klemtu. It’s a race against the clock as Ella tries to make it back in time to give a speech protesting a proposed pipeline that would cross Indigenous land. Ella is joined by her aunt, cousin and grumpy uncle, as the four paddle with all their might through the Inside Passage and past the shores of the Great Bear Rainforest. Join this family on the adventure of a lifetime that reflects on the importance of protecting our lands for future generations.
Zoe Leigh Hopkins. She is a Canadian Heiltsuk/Mohawk writer and film director who began her career in acting in 1991 at the age of 15, before later pursuing film making. Her most notable works are Kayak to Klemtu (2017), The Embargo Project (2015) and Mohawk Midnight Runners (2013) with her first short film Prayer for a Good Day (2004) premiering at the Sundance Film Festival. She is the daughter of famous Mohawk journalist, Brian Maracle, and is a fluent speaker of the Mohawk language. Hopkins is also a part of the Embargo Collective, selected to join by the ImagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival, which is a group of seven Indigenous film makers from around the world who collaborate and challenge each other to create new, unusual films.
